Pharmacy Technician Training in Virginia

Pharmacy Technician training in the state of Virginia is essential if you wish to become a full time Pharmacy Technician. In the state of Virginia a candidate may work for nine months without a Pharmacy Technician certification provided they are enrolled with a state approved training program and are registered to write the examination. After the nine month grace period a candidate must take the examination and become certified in order to continue working as a Pharmacy Technician.

The definition of a Pharmacy Technician in Virginia is someone who is registered with the Virginia Pharmacy Board as a Pharmacy Technician and who provides technical services in a pharmacy that doesn’t require professional judgement regarding medications. A Pharmacy Technician in Virginia must work under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.

Mandatory Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Virginia

In order to register as Pharmacy Technician Trainee in Virginia you will have to meet a few standard criteria, namely:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • You don’t need a High School Diploma to register in Virginia, but many of the schools who offer the relevant courses do require a GED or High School Diploma.
  • You must submit to a criminal background check. The Board may refuse to grant registration based on a review of your criminal history.
  • You must pass a Board-approved technician exam. (You may work as a Pharmacy Technician for up to 9 months without passing a Board-approved exam, provided you are registered as studying for the exam and intend to take it within the 9 month period.)

Coursework Details for Pharmacy Technician Examination in Virginia

State approved training programs in Virginia give classroom instruction and traditional study along with laboratory and clinical experience to prepare graduates for employment as Pharmacy Technicians in which ever pharmacy setting they find themselves employed in, be it in retail pharmacy, a hospital or a laboratory.

Registration with the Pharmacy Board of Virginia is not required to practice as a Pharmacy Technician, however if you write the national examination and you wish to maintain your status as a nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician you will have to maintain your registration and your Continued Education (CE) every two years.

Coursework for the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Examination:

Graduates of the Virginia State Pharmacy Technician programs will apply for the state’s Pharmacy Technician exam. If you choose to complete the National examination you will apply through the PTCB. This is advisable if there is a good chance that you will want to move states at some stage.

The coursework you can expect to cover in your studies should include the following:

  • Pharmacy Law & Regulations
  • Pharmacology for Technicians
  • Pharmacy Ethics
  • Medication Safety
  • Medication Order Forms
  • Pharmacy Inventory Management
  • Pharmacy Information Systems Usage and Applications
  • Sterile and Non Sterile Compounding
  • Anatomy
  • Healthcare Systems
  • Physiology
  • Medical Terminology
  • Pharmaceutical Calculations

Length and Cost of the Pharmacy Technician Training Program in Virginia

All learning programs have associated costs attached, which students must budget for: textbooks, registration, course materials, uniforms, background screening, CPR training, immunizations and exam fees are some of the extra costs of Pharmacy Technician training. Fortunately, many bursaries and subsidies have been made available by both pharmaceutical companies and institutions of learning.

The Course requires an internship (hands on practical training) under the guidance of a Pharmacist. Most students start their theoretical studies first and then complete them while working their 9 month grace period. There are a number of pharmacies who are willing to train and employ candidates – you should contact your course provider for affiliated companies.

Costs vary from school to school.
