Pharmacy Technician training in the state of Ohio helps a candidate pass the certification examination. In the state of Ohio a candidate may work for one year without a Pharmacy Technician certification provided they are actively studying towards the exam. After the first year a candidate must take the examination and become certified in order to continue working as a Pharmacy Technician. The definition of a Pharmacy Technician is someone who is registered with the Board as a Pharmacy Technician and who provides technical services in a pharmacy that doesn’t require professional judgement regarding medications. A Pharmacy Technician in Ohio must work under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist in command.

To be able to perform the duties of a Pharmacy Technician after the first year, candidates must pass the certification examination. Both the ICPT and the PTCB certifications are Ohio State approved.

Mandatory Pharmacy Technician Requirements in Ohio

In order to register as Pharmacy Technician in Ohio you will have to meet a few standard criteria, namely:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Submit to a criminal background check. In the interest of public safety, Ohio requires two criminal background checks: one by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, and one by the FBI.
  • Pass a Board-approved technician exam. (You may work as a Pharmacy Technician for up to 12 months without passing a Board-approved exam, providing you are studying for the exam and intend to take it at the end of the 12 month period.)

There are two Pharmacy Technician Certificate Examinations which are recognized in Ohio: The national certification: The National PTCB PTCE, and the ICPT (Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) Exam.

Registration with the Pharmacy Board of Ohio is not required to practice as Pharmacy Technician. However, if you write the national examination and wish to maintain your status as a nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician you will have to maintain your registration and your Continued Education (CE) every two years.
